LIVE IN THE LAND OF THANKFULNESS
by Frank B. Whitney
I love the Land of Thankfulness, Where blessings overflow.
I claim it as my native home; Most charming land I know;
And if I’ve need of anything, No matter what it may be,
I just give thanks with confidence and see it come to me.
I like to live in Thankfulness. . . l’d live there all my days;
Would let its spirit stir my soul. . . And fill my heart with praise.
I questioned once how I had found a place of such a kind;
Knew I’d discovered it, because I’d thankful thoughts in mind.
Oh, come with me to Thankfulness!
We ask this of you; That you be always thankful, friend. . .
But this is all you do. And if there’s anything you need,
No longer doubt or fear; The thing you seek is awaiting you,
It surely will appear.

Blessings
I am a blessing of God’s love and light.
Poet James Dillet Freeman wrote, “Make me a blessing, Lord. Help me to help those needing help.” A blessing is an imparting of spiritual good, and to be a blessing is to be a beacon that shines forward hope, faith, and wisdom. When storms arise in the external world, I allow the inner light of Spirit to guide me that I may bring light to those around me.
Acting from spiritual illumination, I offer words of hope and encouragement when others face challenges. I take action to be of service to a neighbor in need. I listen with compassion to the lonely at heart. In all situations, I call forward the creative power of the Word. Regardless of appearances, I affirm health, life, harmony, and abundance. I am a blessing of God’s love and light.
“Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers.” – Romans 12:13

What is Prayer?
Prayer is a conversation; communion with God. As we pray, we connect consciously with God. As we connect consciously, we bring our mind into alignment with God.

Affirmations
We create our life experiences through our way of thinking. One way to align ourselves with Spirit is through affirmations and guided meditations. To affirm is to state positively; to pray is to speak to God; to meditate is to listen. In other words, affirmations are positive statements of Truth, thanksgiving to God. Guided meditations are a tool for relaxing the mind to open the way for Spirit to respond.
As you pray and become more attuned to God, we see you experiencing greater growth and change. We see you experiencing a deep connection with God and finding out who you are as a spiritual being.

My life is filled with an overflowing measure of God’s goodness.
Inner Peace
I center myself in the presence of infinite peace.
I am at peace – one with the Presence of pure being.
Guidance
I follow my guidance with faith and gratitude.
Divine light shines in and through me as a beacon of understanding.
World Peace
I follow Jesus’ example and express goodwill to all.
I am one with God and all humanity in a universe of love and peace.
What is a Prayer Chaplain?
The role of our Prayer Chaplains is simply to pray. Chaplains are not counselors or advice-givers. The core of the Prayer Chaplain commitment is to:
- Hold spiritual space. Holding spiritual space means to stay in a space of non-judgment, to be open to the highest possibilities of Divine Intelligence, and to see the Christ Light in the face of the person to whom they are listening.
- Lovingly listen. To lovingly listen means to listen with an open heart, without judgment, and to be completely focused on and available to the speaker.
- Pray from the heart. To pray from the heart is to listen to the guidance of the Divine and to speak authentically, remembering that this is a prayer. When you look inside in peace and stillness, you already know what to do and say, for now, you are being led by Spirit.
- Hold in confidence what is shared. Chaplains know that a sacred trust is placed in them and that their commitment to confidentiality is the foundation of people feeling safe enough to open their hearts and share their stories.
Unity’s Prayer Chaplain Team
The Unity Prayer Chaplain Team is a service opportunity for members who are looking to take the next step to the development of their own spiritual maturity and level of commitment in their spiritual growth.
The Prayer Chaplain Program teaches people to pray with other people. Here at Unity of Surprise Prayer Chaplain training is offered in the fall. Upon completion of training, Prayer Chaplains make a one-year commitment to fulfilling their responsibilities.
If you would like to learn more about the Prayer Chaplain Program, please contact Reverend Denise Landes by calling the office (602) 625-7510.

The Annual Unity World Day of Prayer
Every September, Unity churches participate in a prayer vigil that is focused on the Spiritual Truth that we are all expressions of God, and that the recognition of that oneness can, and will heal the world.
Unity World Day of Prayer is an annual celebration to affirm peace, abundance, and love on an individual and global level.
There are several ways you can participate, by reading the list of names on special prayer slips that are collected prior to the event, by sitting in silence during the readings, by adding your own prayers. Plan on joining ‘US’; your consciousness will make a difference.
Unity World Day of Prayer
What’s it all about?
Throughout World Day of Prayer, people around the world unite in prayer, heart to heart. Traditionally the event starts with an opening ceremony on Wednesday evening at Unity Village, followed by a candlelight walk to the Silent Unity Prayer Chapel. For 24 hours, a prayer vigil takes place in the chapel, with every name submitted prayed for by volunteers. Some volunteers come from across the country or around the world for this sacred mission.
Although World Day of Prayer 2014 has now come to a close, prayer still continues at Silent Unity, just as it has for more than 120 years.
